Tuy nhiên, trong thông điệp đăng trên mạng xã hội Twitter sau đó, ông chủ Nhà Trắng đã bác bỏ cáo buộc trên và giải thích ông gọi virus SARS-CoV-2 là “virus Trung Quốc” vì nó đến từ quốc gia này.
Dĩ nhiên là Bắc Kinh đang phản ứng giận dữ trước động thái trên trong lúc một số chuyên gia cảnh báo căng thẳng có thể thêm leo thang giữa Trung Quốc và Mỹ liên quan đến cách gọi virus SARS-CoV-2.

Kể từ khi dịch Covid-19 khởi phát ở TP Vũ Hán, tỉnh Hồ Bắc – Trung Quốc, ông Trump thường xuyên cho thấy ông xem virus SARS-CoV-2 là mối đe dọa từ bên ngoài và nêu bật quyết định sớm đóng cửa biên giới với người Trung Quốc.
Chưa hết, nhà lãnh đạo Mỹ và một số quan chức cấp cao trong chính quyền ông cũng tìm cách quy trách nhiệm cho Trung Quốc đối với sự lây lan của dịch bệnh, dẫn đến phản ứng đáp trả của Bắc Kinh.
Mỹ và Trung Quốc thường xuyên tranh cãi về chuyện nước nào không nỗ lực khống chế dịch bệnh. Giới chức Mỹ chỉ trích Trung Quốc xử lý kém dịch bệnh, cản trở xuất khẩu khẩu trang và những thiết bị y tế bảo hộ khác.
